Things I wish I knew when I began college:
I have learned a few extremely valuable lessons. Also, there's a few lessons that probably only apply once in a lifetime.
- No matter how cool your new friends are right when you get to college, you don't need to trust them with your life (or your stuff).
- If a friendship doesn't seem right, it isn't. Do not sacrifice who you are to make your "friends" satisfied.
- The term I spent alone in my dorm room was far better than the one I spent with those wrong friends. Just because you are lonely doesn't mean you should spend your time with the wrong people.
- Take your hardest classes first. If you are not a math major, take ALL math classes needed your freshman year. You WILL forget it, and it WILL be frustrating. And, you see those juniors taking intro level math? That will be you. So get it done.
- Get a job, make some money, but don't get too caught up in having enough cash. Having spending money is great, but it is way too easy to find the value of instant cash greater than the value of a good grade.
- Meet guys, talk, kiss, whatever. Have fun. It's college. DO NOT, however, become the school slut. I can tell you right now who those girls were, and I guarantee they didn't plan on ending up with that title. Don't be a tease. That's no good either. Just be reasonable. Know that your heart will be broken once or twice, and there are guys you will probably hold grudges against for years. It's okay. You'll find the right one eventually. Whether in college, or not.
- Suck up to your professors. Sit in the front row. Make sure they know your name. That way, when you miss a deadline, or you really just don't feel like coming to class, they'll still like you. Trust me, it makes a huge difference.
- As much as I love Chuy, don't have an animal while in college. It's much harder to find a place to life, and it makes a roommate situation that much harder. Plus, my poor dog deserves much more outdoor activity than I give him with my insane schedule.
- In college, it's okay to be the one involved in everything. You know why? Your resume looks better than the beer drinking average joe student. And they can say whatever they want (which should be nothing, because it's usually cool to be involved), but you'll be the one driving the newer car, living in the nicer place, and getting to go on cool vacations because you have more money to spend than they do. Because you got involved.
- When dad tells you to take care of your car, take care of your car.
- Keep a clean house. Happy roommates, happy mind.
- Remind yourself not to keep looking for the next best thing. Enjoy the now, and quit wishing for tomorrow.
- Find cheap hobbys, it makes your life much easier.
- Learn to work hard - if your parents have more money than someone elses, people have less respect for your work ethic. Prove them wrong.
I will be continuously adding to this list, in hopes that it will be of some use to a new little freshman!
